Fighters search for winning combination

06 Oct 2014

Mogoditshane Fighters assistant coach, Mpho Mabogo says their technical team is still searching for a winning combination despite outclassing title rivals, Black Forest 2-0 on  October 5.

Two late goals by midfielder, Nonofo Baatweng and substitute striker, Gopolang Matlou condemned Forest to their first loss of the season in the Debswana First Division south during a tense game played at the Fighters ground.

After a scrappy first half in which Forest dominated without creating too many clear-cut chances, Fighters took control of the match in the second period and Baatweng swept home a loose ball in the 80th minute after a poor clearance by Mogomotsi Kerebotswe.

Matlou secured victory five minutes later with a low drive past goalkeeper, April Phale after another poor piece of defending by the visitors. Fighters joined Forest on 10 points at the top of the log after five matches as the battle for promotion to the premier league started to heat up.

Mabogo said Fighters were aiming to win the first division and gain promotion back to top flight football, but admitted they were still work in progress.

“We are not at the level where we want to be because we do not have a settled team at the moment. We are still trying different combinations and are looking for a winning combination,” said the former Zebras striker who is assisting veteran coach, Stanley Tshosane.

Mabogo tipped relegated Uniao Flamingo Santos and last season’s third-place finishers Black Forest as Fighters’ strongest rivals for the league championship.

In other first division south results, Rolling Boys continued their resurgent form with a 1-0 win over Prisons XI on Saturday, while Black Peril beat Modipane United 3-1 and Santos outclassed struggling Ghanzi Terrors 3-0.

Rookies Lesirane City held star-studded Jwaneng Galaxy to a 2-2 draw on Sunday while Killler Giants edged Sharps 1-0. Ends
