Public Service Commission members take oath 8232

16 Sep 2014

President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama has sworn in two new members of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

The two members are Mr Legwaila Legwaila and Ms Keorapetse Boepetswe. Speaking in an interview following the swearing in of the two new members on September 16, the permanent secretary for presidential affairs and public administration, Ms Kebonye Moepeng said the country's constitution provided for the President to appoint members of the PSC.

The members of the commission, she said, were appointed to assist the government resolve appeals from public officers. However, she noted that before proceeding to the commission, public officers were required to follow all the right channels of the appeal’s procedure when querying decisions taken against them.

Since there was also a Public Service Bargaining Council (PSBC), she said public officers had a choice to either lodge their appeal with the PSBC or the PSC.

The PSC chairperson, Ms Moepeng said, had to be a member of the Judicial Service Commission, adding that every decision that the commission arrived at would be final.

The PSC, Ms Moepeng noted, should consist of five members. She said currently it was made up of only four members, adding that the other two members were previous members of the commission.

These are Mr Simon Hirschfeld, who was the chairperson and Ms Kelebogile Lecoge. She added that although the PSC should consist of five members but currently had four members, it would not stop them from performing their duties as a quorum was formed by three members. ends
