Improper storage of waste worrisome

Waste storage in households around the Central District leaves much to be desired, the Central District Council (CDC) chairperson, Mr Lesego Raditanka said when officially opening a full council meeting on September 8.
Mr Raditanka told fellow councillors and officials attending the council meeting that the lack of waste receptacles in homes resulted in waste being easily blown about thereby littering the environment.
“Such a deficiency defeats efforts of scheduled waste collection and you will agree with me that most of our homesteads do not have waste storage facilities, which means they cannot even account for what happens to the waste they produce,” the council leader said.
Mr Raditanka challenged fellow councillors to encourage members of their respective communities to acquire waste bins, pointing out that some of the waste equipment such as a drum was affordable.
He said a clean environment could change the look of the district and lead to good health, adding that the Central District was the gate way to Botswana tourism from all angles of the country; as such, it was important for it to look decent.
“Community participation to the initiative of ‘one bin one yard’ is a good idea towards green tourism, a clean district, and ultimately a clean Botswana,” said the chairperson.
Mr Raditanka also appealed to his councillors to ensure that their campaign material such as posters was tightly secured to withstand harsh weather conditions and thus avoid being a public nuisance. ENDS
