UB defend trophy

07 Sep 2014

University of Botswana Boxing Club defended their Keone Mooka Mageu championship on September 6.

Their smooth road to championship was started by Tefo Rammupudu of light flyweight, who outclassed his opponent Marshal Mokgwaelwa of DTCB 3-0.

Throughout the bout, Tefo took the war to his opponent and in the second and final round, Marshal failed dismally to block Tefo’s left hand punches.

Even though Onkarabaile Mothibedi of SSKB gave the 2012 BNSC sportsman of the year, Oteng Oteng a tough time in the 52 kg category, it was the latter who emerged victorious with a 3-0.

Mothibedi showed him little respect in the ring, and at the end of the tournament their fight was declared the best bout.

Kefentse Molalapata of UB Boxing Club battled it out with Opelo Modungwa of Mafika in the 56 kg bout which was closely contested. The bout could have gone either way since it was difficult to predict the winner.

It was the judges who handed 2-1 victory to Molalapata.

The other much talked about bout pit Lentswe Zwinila of Glen Valley Boxing Club aagaint Mmusi Tswiige of Prisons in the 69 kg.

The two boxers matched each other pound for pound as they both had the stamina and good movements in the ring.

The two pugilists always went out of their way to impress their spectators whenever they meet.

It was however, sweet revenge for Zwinila as he defeated Tswiige since he had denied him a gold medal in the same tournament in 2012.

During the bout, both boxers showed a lot of experience as they both managed to block, move and attack when necessary, but at the end of the bout it was Zwinila’s jabs that counted the most as he was declared the winner with 2-1.

Zwinila told BOPA immediately after the bout that he was happy because he managed to outclass, the boxer who denied him the Mooka Mageu gold medal in 2012.

He however said since 2012, he made it a habit of winning against him given that he managed to win him in tournaments such as Best of the Best in 2013, and in this year’s Inter club boxing tournament.

In other bouts Kabelo Bagwasi of DTCB won 3-0 against Hendrick Motlhame of Prisions while his brother, Kagiso Bagwasi, who is also from the same team, emulated him by beating his opponent Ookeditse Bobeilwe from SSKB 3-0 as well.

In the 75 kg, Troy Otsweleng of Eastern Military Garrison (EMG) taught Tetlo Motswakgomo of Mafika some boxing lessons by beating him 3-0 while a bout against Chriswell Jongwe of BMC and Zibani Chikanda of EMG was given to Chikanda after the referee stopped the bout.

In the ladies bouts, 46-49kg Susan Modisaotsile of BMC won gold after beating Oarabile Kgopolo of EMG 2-1.

Joyce Katlholo of KSBC won 3-0 against Lesego Eijah of Francistown in the 51-54 kg category.

In the 57-60kg, Kelebogile Monthusi of EMG found it tough against Tebo Gaotingwe of DTCB, since Tebo managed to win 3-0 against her in the 60-64 kg.

Keamogetse Kenosi of DTCB beat Orapeleng Ketshametse 3-0.

In the 64-69 kg category, Tshepang Moilwa of SSKB scored 3-0 against Glen Valley Boxing Club’s boxer Erica Setso, while in the 69-75 kg Adelaide Maapatsane of Glen Valley Boxing Club was also beaten 3-0 by Katlego Olatotse of 1-2-3.

Overall, UB took position one followed by DTCB while EMG settled for the third spot. UB coach, Lechazani ‘Master’ Luza scooped the coach of the tournament while the best male boxer award went to Kabelo Bagwasi.

The best female bout went to Olatotse and Maapatsane.

The best referee of the tournament was Etsogile Ngwako and the best judge award went to Kabo Garebone. Ends
