02 Sep 2014
As helpers continue to better lives of the less privileged members of society around the country, Tonota Sub-district council chairperson, Peter Williams appeared glad on Monday when he announced that a number of such people in his area of jurisdiction have been equally blessed.
Updating the ongoing sub-council meeting about projects and programmes undertaken in the sub district, Cllr Williams said a destitute person at Shashe Mooke village had received a three bedroomed house, a pit latrine and water connection from Debswana.
He also announced that a group of farmers had donated 16 x 50kg bags of sorghum to the department of Social and Community Development for onward distribution to destitute persons in Tonota village.
The council leader said that Banc ABC had also built a four-roomed house and a pit latrine for a destitute family in Tonota.
Daisy Loo, he noted, had also donated 72 blankets to the needy children in Tonota, while Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) had donated a two-and-half house with a pit latrine, and fencing, as well as water connection for a destitute person at Mandunyane.
He said 12 houses which were constructed during the 2013/14 financial year had all been completed and handed over to deserving beneficiaries, adding that the council had been funded to the tune of P1 100 000 for the construction of 11 houses for the 2014/15 financial year.
He said as part of affirmative action, Mabesekwa and Gojwane had been given six houses - three per village. The other remaining five houses would be constructed in Tonota, Shashe Mooke, Borolong, Serule and Mandunyane, he highlighted.
He applauded the good Samaritans for their gesture of good will saying they had in fact fulfilled one of Vision 2016’s pillars of ‘A compassionate, Just and Caring Nation.’
Cllr Williams stated that Tonota Sub district had 4036 beneficiaries registered under the welfare programme, adding that there had been an increase in the number of registered temporary destitute persons and needy students as compared to the previous years.
On other issues, he said that the sub-district had managed to take services to the people of Mandunyane, Shashe Mooke, Chadibe and Foley.
He urged councillors to encourage their electorates to attend such important events as they gave them the opportunity to interact with officers and receive information about products and services that are offered to them.
He mentioned that an area of 225 m2 of potholes was patched in Mandunyane and along the Shashe River School access road which were in a dilapidated state.
Consequently, he said the construction of a Foot Bridge at Foley was on-going, while the construction of several culverts in the Tonota sub-district had been completed. Ends
