25 Aug 2014
Botho University held the fourth annual career fair designed to provide an opportunity for aspiring job seekers to interact with employers and obtain contact details.
The fair was also meant for graduates to have an in-depth knowledge about various industries in one convenient setting at their Gaborone campus. Botho University vice chancellor and managing director, Ms Sheela Ram said the fair was growing and was pleased that employers were taking part.
She said they started with 7 companies but now there are many companies taking part. Ms Ram said the fair offers a platform where graduates can exchange knowledge and also opens opportunities for them.
She noted that their programmes are tailored to meet the industry needs, noting that they have included a semester of internship.
“The energy of graduates energizes the organisations therefore there is need to give them opportunities to work and understand their work environment,” she said.
Ms Ram also urged graduates to be open-minded in the field of work and make full use of their potential to stand out from the rest.
For his part, head of Human Resources at BotswanaPost Ms Kamogelo Chiusiwa congratulated the graduates for their academic success and said the calibre of Botho University graduates is of good quality which makes them employable.
She acknowledged the fact that Botho University is going the extra mile to help find jobs for their graduates.
Ms Chiusiwa noted that companies realise potential in graduates through such initiatives like the career fair and through internship incorporated in the university academic programmes.
“You did a good job and it is your time to fly, you are in a good place because you have everything before you” said the Kenyan High
Commissioner Ms Jean Kimani while addressing the graduates at the fair.
She said graduates should not feel bad about small beginnings, “In life it is not where you start, how you start but how you finish,” she added.
Ms Kimani said graduates should make plans and set smart goals for their life, noting that the goals should be realistic and measurable.
She said that graduates should not limit themselves but rather be expansive in their endeavours.
She also stressed that when graduates present themselves, they should be sure that the way they present themselves is the way they want to market themselves, “it is not what you say, it is what you do not say that can make a difference,” she said.
The participants were treated to inspirational songs by the acapella group HSQ. Ends
