Official urges residents to develop plots
11 Aug 2014
Residents of Lesoma have been encouraged to develop their residential plots instead of selling them.
Chobe land board senior public relations officer, Mr Ndiye Joel said in an interview that the land board had allocated 300 residential plots in Lesoma in 2012. He said about 100 plots were reserved for the youth, but only half of the total allocated had been developed.
Mr Joel urged those still lagging behind to start developing as the development covenant of five years would pass before structures were put in place. “Transferring land that you own is a way of depriving yourself a bright future,” said Mr Joel.
In addition, he said most of the land that was allocated as fields in the past had been changed into campsites and this showed that those who owned them transferred them.
He said, “Even though Tribal Law allows such we do not encourage the sale and transfer of land, as it is a commodity that can be passed on from generation to generation.”
Mr Joel advised that instead on transferring land, residents should lease it. Recently, he added 17 agro industrial plots were allocated in the village and they have a development covenant period of a year.
Residents were also reminded to register their plots with Chobe Land Board and advised to bring with them a copy of Omang, plot certificate or title deed. Those who do not have certificates should bring letters from dikgosi, he added. Ends
