Police caution truck drivers residents

07 Aug 2014

Kazungula police station commander, Superintendent Vusumusi Jorowe has urged truck drivers to be cautious as they queue along the Kazungula Ferry road, especially those who are carrying cargo that could attract wildlife.

Supt Jorowe said in an interview recently that they received a report that an elephant destroyed a couple of bags containing maize seeds from a truck that was parked opposite the Kazungula Weigh Bridge on Sunday night.

He said trucks normally form long queues at Kazungula when the pantoons are not operating, adding that in this incident no casualties were recorded but the driver was shaken by the ordeal.

Supt Jorowe cautions truck drivers that, “They should exhaust all avenues to avoid queuing, especially when they are loaded with cargo.”

The Kazungula station commander said elephants had been roaming inside their premises in the evenings and advised people not to visit the station at that time of the day but instead call.

However, he said there had not been any reports of people attacked by wild animals, hence the need to take precautionary measures.

Supt Jorowe said they were in constant contact with the department of wildlife.

He also advised residents of Kasane and Kazungula to refrain from entertaining themselves at the Kasane Hot Springs after sunset as it could be very risky.

“Elephants and buffaloes use this area as a gateway to the river. We also have hippos that leave the water in search of food at night,” said Supt. Jorowe. Ends
