The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlhogile Tshireletso says she is aware of the escalating number of road traffic accidents involving pedestrians along the Kudumatse drive in Gaborone.
Answering a question in Parliament, she said most of the accidents occurred at ungazettted crossing points along this road between Old Naledi location, and the industrial site. She said a safe pedestrian crossing had been provided at the Kudumatse road/Old Lobatse intersection.
Furthermore Ms, Tshireletso said her ministry had not considered constructing an overhead pedestrian bridge across this road because in the short term there will be an assessment for additional traffic signal along the road and other major roads in the city under a World Bank funded project.
The assistant minister said the bidding documents for the conceptual design “Design and Build” project are planned to be completed in August 2014 followed by the tendering process over a period of 3-4 months’ up to December 2014.
She said implementation of the project will then start from quarter 4 of 2014/2015 and is expected to take about 24 months.
Member of Parliament for Gaborone South ,Mr Kagiso Molatlhegi had wanted to know whether she was aware of the escalating number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians crossing into Old Naledi and the Kudumatse drive in Gaborone, whether the minister will consider constructing an overhead pedestrian bridge to prevent more accidents from occurring and when should residents expect this intervention.
