Eye Love Hope restores sight
03 Aug 2014
Botswana and South Korea have cooperated well since 1968, a relationship that continues to blossom given the bilateral ties between the two states.
South Korean ambassador to South Africa Mr Yoon Lee said this at the launch of ‘Eye Love Hope,’ an eyesight recovery operation for the less fortunate children in Botswana.
Eye Love Hope is supported by the Ministry of Health, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Daewoo E & C.
Ambassador Lee said they have corporate social responsibilities that they share with Korean companies and they are pleased by the initiative taken by KEPCO and Daewoo E&C to help Batswana.
The representative of KEPCO in South Africa Mr Young Park said he was delighted by what KEPCO has done for the less fortunate Batswana although they do not have any investments in the country. He said KEPCO has had opportunities to support children of Botswana since 2012.
Mr Park said KEPCO plans to support eye surgery cost for 1004 people until 2021, a breakdown of 100 children each year to spread a culture of sharing and giving light of hope to those in need. Twelve children are already on the eyesight recovery operation special programme of Eye Love Hope.
Deputy Director of Technical Services in the Department of Clinical Services of the Ministry of Health (MOH), Mr Botsang John said their mission was to promote and provide comprehensive preventative, curative and rehabilitative quality health care to the nation.
He said that for the MOH, community service was a great way to provide opportunities for the less fortunate to live dignified lives and they have found KEPCO’s Eye Love Hope project strategically aligned to their mission and philosophy of community service.
He said he hoped that KEPCO will continue this project to assist young Batswana as he believed that taking recovery surgery in the early stage can restore eyesight of affected youth. ENDS
