Tender awaits poverty eradication beneficiaries
03 Aug 2014
Francistown City Council, during financial years 2013/14 and 2014/15, procured bread through an open tender reserved for citizens.
The acting minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mr Shaw Kgathi has however said the procurement process has disadvantaged poverty eradication beneficiaries who cannot compete due to economies of scale.
“To address this anomaly, as an affirmative action, Council is working on a proposal to reserve five primary schools to be supplied by poverty eradication beneficiaries during the 2015/16 financial year,” Mr Kgathi explained in Parliament on Thursday (July 31).
Additionally, he said poverty eradication beneficiaries in Francistown are currently supplying bread for Council events and Ipelegeng.
“Plans are underway to include the Gerald Estate project to supply bread for similar events,” he said. Francistown West MP Dr Habaudi Hobona had asked the acting minister whether he was aware that a community poverty eradication project in Gerald Estates had been sidelined in the supply of bread to two primary schools in Francistown, and that that bread was supplied from Selebi Phikwe.
She said it negated success of the purpose for poverty eradication. ENDS
