Kanye needs drainage masterplan

29 Jul 2014

The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development says he is aware of complaints of poor drainage of rainwater, which affects residents of Mmatshitswane and Nyorosi east wards in Kanye and any other parts of the village.

Answering a question in Parliament on July 28, Mr Olebile Gaborone said he was informed by the Southern District Council that the three culverts that had been constructed along newly constructed bitumen road had been correctly positioned to channel the flow of water across the road and away from people’s yards.

He said due to the steep gradients, it had been observed that rainwater flew with a high intensity resulting in an overflow from the channels and some water entering into some yards.

Mr Gaborone said there was need to commission a drainage master plan, which would be designed and constructed for the entire village to bring the issue of drainage to a conclusion, adding this would be considered amongst the projects proposed during NDP 11.

Mr Gaborone further said when residents were affected by this water during the rainy season, they should inform the Council, which will liaise with the Disaster Committee, so that they could initiate any emergency procedures necessary to divert water from damaging people’s property.

Kanye South, Member of Parliament, Mr Abram Kesupile, had asked the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development if he was aware that residents of Mmatshitswane and Nyorosi East constantly complain about rain-water that floods their homes and compounds for days due to culverts that were wrongly placed.

If so, the MP asked the minister to state why the Southern District Council could not put to an  end “this destructive and painful seasonal torment.” ENDS
