Jwaneng Mayor lauds Khama
22 Jul 2014
Jwaneng mayor, Mr Amos Jahana has applauded President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama for his regular walk-abouts, which he described as productive.
“His visits are not in vain because he gets to appreciate the day-to-day lives of Batswana and the challenges they experience,” he explained.
Speaking at the handing over of 10 Omega radios to senior citizens in Jwaneng, Mr Jahana said that when he assumed office, the President noticed a loophole because all government programmes were being tailor-made for the youth at the expense and exclusion of senior citizens.
He said in order to appreciate their contribution to the development of this country, President Khama came up with different initiatives such as blankets and radio donations aimed at benefitting the elderly. “The current government appreciates that not all of them receive enough care from their children and guardians, and therefore came up with programmes that could help the situation.
That is why you find that currently, they receive blankets and radios from government, and we are also aware that they are not supposed to queue for services,” he stated.
Furthermore, the mayor encouraged beneficiaries to attend kgotla meetings to be up to date with government programmes. He said they contributed a lot to the development of Jwaneng and in guiding upcoming generations.
For his part, the chairperson of the Jwaneng Umbrella Ward Development Committee, Mr Justice Motaung said what the government was doing for senior citizens was there for everybody to see.
He appealed to beneficiaries to listen to government programmes on the radio. “Don’t let your children take those radios from you because their duty is to take care of you not to take from you,” he advised. ENDS
