Police patrols reduce crime

22 Jul 2014

Police patrols bore fruit as evidenced by the low number of criminal cases recorded during this year’s President’s Day Holidays, Officer Commanding of District Number 13, senior superintendent Counsel Moyo has told BOPA.

Supt Moyo said on Saturday (July 19) that they had 15 cases of break-ins in his area of jurisdiction which comprises Old Naledi, Urban, Mogoditshane, Gaborone West, Sir Seretse Khama Airport, and Ramotswa Police stations.

He said they had recorded five break-ins in Ramotswa, one in Gaborone West, and nine in Mogoditshane, adding that they would continue to intensify both road and street patrols.

Senior superintendent Moyo advised pedestrians to avoid walking alone at night and in places where there are no street lights whist; party revelers were also warned against walking at night to avoid being victims of crime.

The Police chief also explained that Sir Seretse Khama Police were investigating a case in which a family was robbed of their belongings by a group of men who claimed to be police officers.

He stated that the victims were robbed of P500, cellphones and their car, although the car was later found abandoned in Gaborone.

In another case, Senior Superintendent Moyo said they were looking for a group of boys who attempted to rob a bar in Tlokweng village.

He said that the boys’ attempt flopped after members of the public responded to a call for help. He appealed to members of the public to help them with information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits.

Meanwhile, traffic police officers who patrol the Gaborone/Ramotswa section of the A1 road reported a peaceful and quiet President’s Day holidays in road traffic accidents.

As usual, the police had replaced the normal road blocks with a series of sporadic road blocks in most of the internal roads and highways in and around Gaborone where a number of motorists were charged for various traffic offences.

Sergeant Isaac Ringa of Old Naledi Police Station said in an interview that they recorded about 15 cases of speeding, adding that the movement of vehicles was very low as compared to what obtained on Friday when most of the people were leaving for various destinations. ENDS
