Clean environment vital for health

17 Jul 2014

The public, government departments and other stakeholders must unite in cleaning the environment for the good of all.

Gumare environmental health officer, Ms Seneo Madise, said in an interview recently that everyone must commit themselves to cleaning the environment as a way of uplifting one of the national Vision 2016 pillars of a companionate, just and caring nation.

She said this was vital because quality sanitation and safe water supply were tied together and cleaning the environment was a way of preventing disease outbreaks. Ms Madise said this could only be achieved by engaging in safe ways of handling and disposing off waste.

She said good sanitation would prevent deadly diseases such as cholera, and malaria. Ms Madise also expressed concern that residents, businesses and government departments in Gumare were failing to take part in community clean-up campaigns.

She noted that her office recently sent out a request to all the stakeholders, inviting them to a clean-up campaign but they failed to attend the event. She said only her office took part with the help of casual laborers.

She urged all to participate in community cleaning as their efforts alone were not enough to keep their objective of a clean environment alive.

Ms Madise also encouraged households, vendors, and business premises to pay P7, P25 and P120 monthly respectively, in order for the council to collect rubbish from their premises She also urged residents to stop littering adding littering carried a charged P300 fine. ENDS
