No plans to turn Ngamiland state land into grazing land

16 Jul 2014

Ministry of Lands and Housing does not have any plans to turn some parts of Ngamiland state land into grazing land, Minister Lebonaamang Mokalake has said.

Responding to a question in Parliament, Mr Molakake said this was so because of the need to maintain balance between land uses provided for in the Ngamiland Integrated Land Use Plan prepared in 2009 as well as area specific land management and development plans.

He said the plans had segmented land into various land use zones onto the basis of capability and sustainability in a bid to address competition and conflict between the various land uses such as livestock grazing, wildlife conservation, tourism and other uses.

Minister Mokalake said all the land uses are equally important for the sustainable development of the concerned region.

Maun East MP, Mr Frank Ramsden had asked Minister of Lands and Housing if will turn parts of the state land falling within Ngamiland District jurisdiction into grazing land for pastoral farming in view of shortage of grazing land in the district due to the fences set as Ramsa boundaries around the Okavango Delta.
