The Sheerwood area near Martins Drift border post held market day where people from all walks of life showcased their art and craft talent on June 28.
The event, which was the first of its kind in the area, brought the community of the Sheerwood area together. Visitors had an opportunity to browse a range of craft stalls from different parts of the country. Those who had the stalls were from the farms, villages and towns near Sheerwood area.
There was so much to discover at the market because there were stalls for handmade jewelry, handmade bags to handmade knitwear, toys, cards and homemade jams, food, fresh produce, gifts and plants.
In an interview the organiser of the event, Ms Kae Ferguson said that she was delighted with the number of people who came to the event. She said it was a great opportunity to open the doors to the community so that they can showcase the local craft work.
Ms Ferguson said there are many farmers in the area and some do not have the market to sell their products. She however said the market day gave them the opportunity to sell and market their products.
She said the market day mostly targeted the tourists and business people who cross the Martins Drift boarder post on daily basis. She said the tourists bought crafts and different things from the stalls and some of them made some orders.
She said most people who did not know about Botswana realised that there are skilled craftsmen and women who are working everywhere especially in the rural areas.
Ms Ferguson said the market day proved people from other countries wrong because they thought that Botswana has a shortage of creative talent. She further said that they intend to hold the market day regularly to create the market for the local crafts. ENDS
