Gaborone Sun Hotel has donated beds, linen and curtains worth P100 000 to the department of wildlife and national parks.
Receiving the donation on June 24 in Gaborone, the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Mr Tshekedi Khama thanked the hotel for their generous contribution.
Mr Khama said the gesture would go a long way in improving the lives of the officers hired to protect wildlife.
The minister said they had approached the hotel asking for donation of used furniture but instead they got more than they had bargained for as the hotel gave the department 50 new beds with linen and curtains.
He said the bedding would be distributed to officers deployed in national parks and anti-poaching camps throughout the country. He said helping the needy should not only be an initiative of government, but for the civil society too.
The minister further called on more organisations to follow in the footsteps of Gaborone Sun and show generosity. Gaborone Sun’s general manager Mr Derick van der Nest said the gesture was a highlight for them as they strived to make a difference in people’s lives.
He said the bedding would improve the lives of the officers and also keep them warm and comfortable, particularly during winter seasons like now.
The GM said Gaborone Sun wanted to continue making a difference in the lives of Batswana by heeding calls such as the one from Mr Khama’s ministry.
The acting director of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Mr Charles Mojalemotho said the bedding would enhance wildlife officers’ lives because they spent most of their time at the parks. ENDS
