Sound record keeping crucial in cricket

Botswana Cricket Association has called for proper keeping of financial records of clubs and organisations to ensure that accountability and stability prevail.
The chief executive officer of Botswana Cricket Association, Girish Ramakrishna said financial records were very crucial in all aspects of life, hence the need to ensure their proper keeping.
Addressing primary school teachers at Francistown College of Education on Wednesday, Ramakrishna said the objective of the workshop was to empower teaches to ensure effective management of clubs.
The workshop, he said was held in line with the International Cricket Council (ICC) efforts to equip clubs with knowledge so that they could understand what is expected of them. “Last year we were in the Kweneng district where we empowered 15 teachers and now we are empowering 16 teachers in North-East region,” said Ramakrishna.
He stressed that such workshops were important as participants could be appointed to treasury positions in future and prepare budget statements for their organisations. “Poor records keeping leads to misunderstandings and fights within an organisation and the financial statements have to be audited by accountants,” said Ramakrishna.
For his part, Clement Chipanga, the northern region cricket development officer said the workshop was held to come up with capable cricket administrators who can manage clubs, schools or cricket associations.
Furthermore, he said such a move would ensure growth at grass roots level. “We will have well run cricket teams or clubs not only in our region but the country at large because the chief executive officer travels around the country holding these workshops,” said Chipanga.
The north-east regional sports organiser for Botswana Primary Schools Sports Association , Shathiso Kuli applauded the association for the workshop, saying that it was crucial looking at the sporting code they were dealing with. “Cricket will continue to grow because the association sometimes brings coaches from England to come and train us, they even once took teachers to Gaborone for training,” he said.
