AGA honours Magang
02 Jun 2014
Africa Golf Association (AGA) has honoured former cabinet minister and golf legend David Magang with a distinguished award.
The award was presented to him by AGA president, Joe Malanje during the Gaborone 2014 golf medal award ceremony at Gaborone Golf Club on May 29.
Malanje said AGA had decided to award the former minister of Transport and Communications for pioneering the development of golf in the country by developing a golf course in Phakalane.
He said by so doing, Magang had encouraged many people to become more interested in playing golf and appealed to other businessman in the country to follow suite.
For his part, Magang said he picked up the idea to develop a golf course when he was playing with other golfers from foreign countries, adding that golf is a sport that is played by both young and old people.
He said one day during practice, a friend of his told him of a piece of land that was being sold at Gaborone north and that was when he grabbed the opportunity and bought the land.
Magang said he had always wished that young people should participate in golf sport because the code is not popular in the country.
Other recipients of the award included Trevor Johwa who started the development of the Blue Tree driving range where Blue Tree World of Golf in Gaborone now stands, Botswana Golf Union (BGU) secretary general Mpho Kelosiwang and Martin Magomela, who is the BGU executive committee member responsible for sponsorships.
Another recipient was Steve Smith, who is one of the directors of the Blue Tree World of Golf. Ends
