Use of drugs worrisome

29 May 2014

Gaborone North MP has expressed concern over the use of drugs by students at Marang Junior Secondary School in Gaborone.

Addressing a meeting at the school on May 26, Mr Keletso Rakhudu said the use of drugs such as cocaine had become rampant among students at the school.

Mr Rakhudu, who is also the Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, appealed to the parents to always keep a close eye on their children and also know more about them.

He emphasised the importance of monitoring children, noting that once the child was into drugs, it would be difficult for them to live without. As a result, he or she would resort to habits such as stealing from parents.

He said he was concerned about the future of the nation if school children and other youth became drug addicts.  However, he said, the problem could be solved if parents cooperated with teachers in the matter. He blamed adults who sold drugs to school children.

On other issues, chairperson of the Ward Development Committee , Ms Rosemary Makaleng, told the MP that roads in the ward needed to be maintained. Also, Marang ward had gone two months without any garbage collection. ENDS
