EIA project halts new plot allocations

25 May 2014

The project design of Seuwane residential area located along Ramotswa/Otse road has not yet been completed.

This was said by the Ramotswa sub council chairperson Mr Thabang Keakile during a sub council meeting recently.

He said the consultant engaged for the project has submitted some preliminary design reports.

The Seuwane project, he said entailed the servicing of about 3000 residential plots, the provision of roads, storm water drainage, portable water, sewage facilities, telecommunications and power reticulation facilities.Mr Keakile said the project has been delayed due to lack of access to the Gaborone-Lobatse road and rail crossing, sewage water ponds and portable water.

“Currently, the department of roads is only offering two junctions for the whole area and this has proved not to be enough,” he said. The project environmental impact assessment would not be approved as there wernoponds to accommodate the sludge produced from the area while the Water Utilities Corporation also delayed to provide connection to the ongoing design of Gaborone-Lobatse pipeline.

Mr Keakile noted that the current scenario deforms the idea behind the planned project hence making an appeal to the district authorities to come up with better ways of completing the project.

He told the meeting that there was a high demand for residential plots due to the proximity of the district to Gaborone city.

This, he said was not helped by the termination of land allocation due to the expired Ramotswa Development Plan.

Ramotswa sub council chairperson  said the situation has presented a great challenge to the district authorities, adding that last year the Malete Land Board advertised about 300 plot but they received over 20 000 applications.

“This situation alone reflects a very undesirable position with regard to developing our people,” Mr Keakile said.

On other issues, he regretted vandalism of school properties by students in the district, saying the funds used for the maintenance of such could be channeled to other national development’s needs.
He called on parents talk to their children to stop such behaviour. ENDS
