NEDC commits to assisting less priviledged

The provision of services to the less-privileged members of the society remains one of the core objectives of the North East District Council (NEDC).
The chairperson of NEDC, Councillor City Kealotswe said this at the opening of the ongoing full council meeting in Masunga on Monday May 19.
Cllr Kealotswe, who is also the councillor for Mapoka ward, said the council, through its social and community development department (S&CD) carried a mandate of providing key services and amenities such as water to destitute persons.
As such, he said the NEDC in partnership with Water Utilities Corporation (WUC), undertook a project aimed at connecting water to homesteads of destitute persons in the district.
Cllr Kealotswe said, “a total of 187 beneficiaries have been targeted for connection in the entire district. Currently, the S&CD is assisting beneficiaries with completion of application forms.”
He informed the meeting that various stakeholders and organisations had been actively involved in helping the council in its mandate of assisting the needy.
Some of the donations received, he noted included houses, blankets and clothes and commended Breath of Life Church, Tati Nickel Mining Company (TNMC), Bango Trading company, Sechmore Fire Product, WUC and Stur Pat Holy Day Care Centre for having positively responded to the various needs they saw in the communities in which they operate.
On education, the council chairperson indicated that the reception class programme was progressing well in the district, pointing out that learners had acclimatised to the school environment.
Furthermore, he stated that the special education unit for learners with mental retardation that was introduced at Bugalo Primary School in Tati Siding was similarly progressing smoothly.
He said the enrollment at the unit currently stood at 14.
Mr Kealotswe said the council had been able to provide all the necessary teaching requisites, further indicating that a 26-seater minibus had also been bought for the unit. Ends
