14 May 2014

Lesotho’s minister of foreign affairs, Mr Mohlabi Tsekoa says King Letsie III’s visit to Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) will leave a lasting impression.

Speaking to media after the visit, Mr Tsekoa said Botswana was ahead when it came to deriving wealth from cattle. Mr Tsekoa said it was impressive that BMC was competing with the best in the world particularly the European markets. He said the quality of meat from Botswana was also reinforced by the fact that cattle were being fed naturally.

The foreign minister said, “it is a lesson to us in Lesotho that there are ways in which we could minimise dependence on imported beef or live cattle from South Africa.”

“Given the size of our stock, we can reduce dependence on our immediate neighbours and benchmark on Botswana’s endeavors,” he said.

Mr Tsekoa also noted that Botswana and Lesotho has a series of joint bi-lateral commissions of cooperation that ranges from issues of education, mining, tourism and water.

He said the cattle rearing and beef production was important to the Lesotho economy noting that the country would continue to learn from Botswana. ENDS
