Botho University celebrates AAT award

11 May 2014

Botho University celebrated the Association Accounting Technicians (AAT) international training provider award on May 9 in Gaborone.

Speaking at the celebration, the AAT chairperson, Mr Pyoka Mfuni said the award was the first to be won at an international level. “Botho University will go down in AAT history as the first ever international tuition provider to win this award,” he said.

Mr Mfuni said the awards, which were held at Birmingham on April, were contested by institutions around the world.  He said although they were the inaugural awards, they saw 3 500 votes for the tutor of the year, about 35 students nominated for students of the year and over 70 entries across other categories.

Mr Mfuni said the awards were meant to celebrate the use of new technologies and innovative ways of providing training to students.

The head of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance, Mr Lawrence Kufazvinei said after shortlisting, Botho University was pitted against Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance which has been in existence since 1981, and has access to technology for students at a tender age as compared to Botswana.

As such Mr Kufazvinei said Botho Faculty of Accounting and Finance with only four years of existence became the ultimate winner.

He said when the faculty was started in 2010 it had only 27 students to about 1 300 students currently. He noted that the AAT awards were looking at governance of institutions and policy as well as quality education.

He pointed that Botho was aiming to produce well rounded students who could compete in a global village, adding that as Botho they provided necessary resources for learning.

In her remarks, Botho University Vice Chancellor, Ms Sheela Ram said the Faculty of Accounting and Finance had been growing tremendously since established. Ends
