Makome school pleads for support
07 May 2014
The school head of Makome Secondary School in Mmadinare, Mr Thulaganyo Mbulawa says his school needs financial support to help them upgrade facilities at the school.
Speaking during a May 2 wellness day event, which included a sponsored walk where Nico United coach, Mr Kenneth Mogae was the chief walker, Mr Mbulawa said the main objective of the wellness day and the nine kilometre sponsored walk from the school to Motloutse River Bridge and back was to raise funds to finance an upcoming project run by a club in the school called Four Subjects Club.
He stated that the club was run by unemployed university graduates volunteers from Mmadinare. He said their intention was to boost students learning capability and study skills in general.
Mr Mbulawa explained that the club required about P25 000 for the project to take off and so far parents had managed to contribute P 8 000 towards the initiative.
He pleaded with the community to assist the school so that they could upgrade facilities and improve the level of education at the school and become the best performing school in the Selebi Phikwe cluster.
Mr Mogae highlighted that sport wasa big industry in some countries and Botswana should strive to reach the same level. He said Batswana, especially the youth, should take sport serious because they could earn a living through it.
He said education and sport went hand in hand, but if youth performed badly academically and higher in sports, they could make use of their sport talents later on and benefit from it.
He pleaded with the students to be obedient to their coaches when they were being assigned tasks since they were the ones who normally identified their talents during trainings.
Mr Mogae urged parents who partook in the wellness and sponsored walk event to strive to provide their children with proper sports equipment. Mr. Mogae, who did not only inspire the students as a sport icon, but also as a parent to the students appealed to the parents to work hand in hand with teachers to ensure their children took learning and some school activities such as sport serious.
A retired nurse from Mmadinare Primary Hospital, who is also a Home Health Education club volunteer, Miss Mary Motsumi advised students to eat food that is high in fibre as well as fruits and vegetables. She indicated that exercising strengthens the heart, lowers body pressure and clears the mind.
She emphasized that drinking lots of water is good for the kidneys and that they should avoid quenching thirst with caffeine or alcoholic beverages.
Fatehood Organization Field Facilitator, Mr Lewetse Galetswalelwe urged students to refrain from bad activities that can lead to the spread of HIV/AIDS such as sexual relationships, alcohol and drug abuse. He advised them that those who were already practicing such to stop since it is better to late than never to try. ENDS
