Humanitarianism evident in Botswana
07 May 2014
Botswana continues to enjoy peace and stability because of the caring spirit, which has come to be part of societal norms and values, Kgosi Motshegetsi Bakwena of Lekgwapheng in Molepolole had said.
Speaking during a donation by Botho University students to a family of 30 members in Molepolole, Kgosi Bakwena said the spirit of self-reliance and willingness to help one another helped build a united Botswana to elude tragedies that befell other African states.
Kgosi Bakwena said Botswana was envied by its peers because it avoided civil strife and unrest that were common in other African countries because of tolerance, compassion and botho which is integral part of Botswana culture.
He said by donating food hampers, the students heeded the call by the President, Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama for Batswana to revive the spirit of self-reliance and to help the less fortunate as wider national aspiration embodied in Vision 2016.
He said the food hampers would make a difference in the lives of Ms Baitatotse Montshonyana and her family and augment government efforts of eliminating abject poverty among the less fortunate people.
Ms Lesedi Batswenyego, a representative of Botho University students, said the food hampers and start-up stock for a tuck shop were a way of the students to help the needy Batswana.
He said the students could help the family start the tuck shop so that its dependence on government hand-outs was reduced.
Ms Batswenyego said despite its proximity to Gaborone, Molepolole had few companies that were interested in helping needy Batswana, hence the students chipped in to ease the burden off the government. Ends
