Three female golfers for Africa challenge
06 May 2014
Three female golfers will represent Botswana at the up-coming Africa challenge golf tournament in Kenya in June this year.
The three, Unami Mhotsha, Tiny Kgatlwane and Minkie Molatlhegi, qualified for the Africa challenge after taking position one, two and three respectively at the just ended Botswana ladies golf open, in which Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia took part.
19-year-old Unami was crowned champion after scoring 158 points, followed by Tiny with a combined score of 172 with Minkie on third spot with 174 points.
Unami maintained her dominance in the Botswana ladies golf open, this time garnering first position to improve on the second position she attained in 2012. She showed a lot of improvement in her swing, which is reminiscent of top international golfers like Tiger Woods.
In an interview after the tournament, Unami said she went all out because she was under tremendous pressure from more experienced players like Tiny and Minkie who had played in the Botswana ladies golf open longer.
With a handicap of two, Unami started to lead her opponents in the first round (18 holes), terrorizing even the strongest players in the champion division to win the tournament for the first time ever since she started playing golf at the age of seven.
Speaking at the event, Dr Pearl Moeti spoke strongly about health and sport in women and encouraged women to actively participate in sports, be it golf or jogging. She appreciated the level of women participation in the sport and further appealed to more women to join.
Botswana Life Marketing and Communications Director Gabriel Tlagae said his company was the main sponsor of the event because it has a long standing partnership with Botswana Ladies Golf Union. ENDS
