The Botswana Premier League (BPL) on Monday April 28 announced contenders for this year’s beMOBILE award for the best player of 2013/2014 season. The list was last month whittled down from 15 players to just three finalists. The three players are Otlantshekela Mooketsi from BDF XI, Patrick Kaunda from FC Satmos and Township Rollers goal keeper Mwampule Masule.

That the three have made the final cut is testimony to their sterling performance this season and their individual contribution to their clubs. The trio will fight for the award at the annual end of season awards ceremony.

Each of the individuals has contributed to what has been an action packed campaign. It was a season that was full of surprises and twists and turns, in which the league title went down to the wire while the Top 8 cup was won on penalties. For teams and players alike, it was a tough and nail biting experience.

F.C Satmos’s goal poacher Patrick Kaunda is one player who had a fantastic season. He won the green boot after emerging as the beMOBILE premier league top goal scorer with 20 goals. Though itthey were recently promoted into the elite league, Satmos finished the league at position 6. BDF XI’s left back Otlaantshekela Mooketsi was very instrumental in Matebele’s good run this season.

He guided BDF XI to victory in the Mascom Top 8 tournament and to a second spot finish in the league. Mooketsi also made his international debut for the Zebras against South Soudan last month. Rollers should be eternally grateful to their shot-stopper Mwampule Masule. He was simply a revelation this season. Despite his team’s loss to BDF XI in the finals of the Mascom top 8, Masule remained on top of his game and his prolific form eventually contributed to Rollers winning the 2013/2014 beMOBILE premier league title.

With just a few weeks left before the awards, anticipation has now reached fever pitch and football fans will be eagerly waiting to hear who among the three will be named player of the season.ENDS
