Residents revive self reliance spirit
28 Apr 2014
In an era where many people are still dependent on government for developments, residents of Botalaote/Thomadithotse ward in Mahalapye showed a rare spirit of self-reliance when they came up with the initiative to build a wall (leobo) for their kgotla.
Their efforts were commended by Mr Othugile Motswakwa, the headman of White City ward, which comprises both Botalaote and Tlhomadithotse, at the ground breaking ceremony.
He said people had realised that their kgotla had no suitable shelter and, being aware that government did not have enough funds to cater for all development projects, they decided to use their own funds to build the wall.
“This project is owned by the people, led by the Village Development Committee and the Member of Parliament. It shows our spirit of self-reliance,” he said.
VDC chairperson Mr. Goabaone Mompati explained that the idea of building a wall for the kgotla was born a long time ago but could not materialize due to shortage of funds.
He expressed confidence that the project will proceed smoothly, saying they will soon be calling attendants for the official opening. Mr. Matthews Jongman, an elder in the village, said it was heartening to see people working together for the betterment of society.
“I haven’t seen this place so packed with people in a long time. I believe this is a sign that this project will be a huge success,” he said.
The guest speaker, Deputy Chief of Mahalapye Mr. Tshipe Tshipe, commended the residents of White City for upholding the spirit of self-reliance. He said Botswana is where it is today because of self-reliance, which was used way back by dikgosi through regiments to facilitate developments.
“Through self-reliance we managed to build schools, churches and storage facilities for our yields. I am even more pleased that the youth were actively involved in the whole project. It is good that Batswana are still keeping that spirit of self-reliance,” he said.
Mr. Tshipe donated a bag of cement and cash amounting to P500. Mr. Pro Neo of Mason Building and Designs also donated 10 bags of cement for the project.Ends
