Mascom Wireless has donated P25 000 to Bonatla Primary School for construction of a garden.

Speaking during the handover of the donation, Mascom chief communications officer, Mrs Tebogo Sebego said the sustainable use of the environment was at the core of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiatives.

She said the donation would encourage pupils to preserve the environment and ensure they used it in a sustainable manner. The garden would be officially handed over to the beneficiary in the near future.

Mrs Sebego said three years back, they realised that there was a need to bring in another aspect to the annual Mascom National Horse Race Derby by donating to various schools and organisations in Maun.

“We decided to use the event as a platform for the company to engage in other CSR campaigns to improve the lives of Batswana and to enhance the horse race.” She said the garden would make a difference and add value to the quality of education.

Mrs Sebego noted that in the past years, the company donated computers to some schools to uplift their academic performance.

In addition, she noted that last year the company assisted Okavango Art Association, which worked with visual artists. The company donated a laptop and a printer to the association and also transported artists’ art work to Gaborone to compete at Thapong visual arts competition.

A student from Bonatla  Primary School, Lenneile Motswiri commended Mascom for its noble gesture noting that the donation would promote learning in environmental studies and that the pupils would view the environment in a positive way.

For her part, the school head, Ms Dorcus Sethoko said the agricultural subject needed practicals noting that the donation would go a long way in encouraging pupils to take agriculture seriously.

She said the government encouraged Batswana to utilize their land effectively to produce enough food and she believed that children would use the garden effectively.

“Mascom has adopted us as it is not the first time they donate to us. In the past they donated some computers to our school and indeed they have touched our lives,” she added.

Parents and Teachers Association chairperson, Kgosi Babinang Majatsie thanked Mascom noting that a vegetable garden is a big project which would benefit the school and the entire community.

He said they would sell vegetables to the community and use the proceeeds to develop the school.  ENDS
