Fitness challenge promotes cancer awareness

21 Apr 2014

The Cancer Association of Botswana in collaboration with 360 Degrees shop, Advanced Digital Signage and Jack’s Gym brings the fourth installment of the Kgale Hill Fitness Challenge to Game City on May 4.

The annual event is an awareness campaign for people who are undergoing chemotherapy and those who have conquered cancer through chemotherapy.

“Cancer is one of the biggest health epidemics since HIV/AIDS. We have realised that cancer awareness is something that people in Botswana are not aware of. We strive to have creative ways of creating awareness around cancer and Kgale Hill Fitness Challenge is one of those activities,” said the executive director of CAB, Sharon Munyoro, during a press briefing at Jack’s Gym recently.

The event will include activities such as 10km walk and run, 28km cycle and aerobics.  Music and other forms of entertainment will be available. Other partners who are involved in the event are Yarona FM, Mmegi newspaper, Game city, Legola media, and Supa Signs.

Shop 360 will provide the winner with a tablet while Jack’s Gym will sponsor some prizes as well. For the 10km and 28km races, the winners will get a six months free membership at any Jack’s Gym.

The second prize is three months free membership at any Jack’s Gym and the third prize is a one month free membership.  Additional prizes for the youngest and oldest person in the crowd will also be available, including a prize for a person who has the longest hair and decides to cut it on the day.

“The passion of fitness does not only bring health benefits but also a mental wellness and attitude towards personal wellness,” said the general manager of Jack’s Gym Terry Baker during the media briefing.

The Kgale Hill Fitness Challenge is mainly targeted at the youth, but this year the focus has expanded to families since cancer affects families.

The general manager of Shop 360, Tumo Maokisa said the main idea is to educate the public about the stigma that patients who are undergoing chemotherapy face and also to inform the nation on the facts of chemotherapy.

The event also aims to encourage exercise as a way to minimise the risk of developing cancer.

Registration is P100 and it is open for everyone above the age of 12. Participants who come as a team will pay P80 registration fee while students pay P70 each. Ends
