13 Apr 2014
Lady Khama Charitable Trust patron, President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama handed two mini-buses worth over P500 000 to Botswana Red Cross Society on Friday, April 11.
Speaking during the handing over ceremony in Gaborone, chairperson of the trust, Mr Dale Te Har said the mini-buses would be used to transport children living with disability to and from school in Francistown.
He noted that Tshimologo Stimulation Centre in Francistown had been struggling to transport children to school on time, adding that the trust’s focus was on vulnerable women and children.
The secretary general of Botswana Red Cross Society, Ms Mabel Rammekwa said 48 children living with disability had been arriving late at school because they used only one mini-bus.
Ms Rammekwa said the school enrolled children from the age range of two to 12, adding that most of them had down syndrome, autism and delayed development.
She said the school taught the children activities of daily living because most of them were severely retarded, adding that they provided speech training, physiotherapy, pre-literacy skills and physical education.
She added that children who were not severely retarded were placed on government schools. ENDS
