Cattle posts not permanent land allocation
09 Apr 2014
Parliament has been informed that cattle posts are not permanent allocations hence not issued any land rights.
Answering a question in Parliament on behalf of the Minister of Lands and Housing, Mr Nonofo Molefhi said it was responsibility of the relocated owners of meraka namely Galosabanyana, Rakhunonyana, Maphaketlhape, Gampodi and Mheelo in Kanye who were affected by developments to provide water for their livestock.
The people from those cattle posts were affected because part of the area of the land they had been occupying was encompassed within the Kanye Development Plan and became part of the planning area, consequently various uses that were not compatible with the plan ceased to exist.
However, Mr Molefhi said when layouts were prepared in fulfilment of the development plan people with defined land rights were assessed and considered for compensation in accordance with prevailing policies and guidelines.
He said where necessary the affected people were advised to resettle elsewhere in areas of their choice.
MP for Kanye South, Mr Abram Kesupile had asked the minister to state where the people who have for many years used the areas of Gatlounyane, Galosabanyaba, Rakhunonyana, Maphaketlhape, Gampodi and Mheelo for meraka in Kanye will be moved to.
He further wanted the minister to explain provisions in place to water their livestock. ENDS
