07 Apr 2014
Children from Selokolela and Sesu could not be admitted at schools in Kanye since there are no boarding schools facilities, Parliament has been told.
Responding to a question from MP for Kanye South, Mr Abraham Kesupile, the Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Patrick Masimolole said instead, the children were admitted at Mmathethe Junior Secondary School because it was the nearest boarding school to their home villages.
Mr Masimolole explained that transport to and from Selokolela and Sesu was provided during all school holidays to needy learners by the council on the recommendation of the social and community unit. He said children who were not needy used public transport as it was the norm throughout the country.
He stated that the management of Mmathethe secondary school had a schedule of activities aimed at increasing contact with parents. He further stated that the school invited all parents to regular Parents Teachers Association meetings and members of the school management team address kgotla meetings in the schools feeder villages, including Selokolela and Sesu.
He said heads of department also made home visits when there was need to follow individual parents on issues involving their children.
Mr Kesupile had asked why the children were not sent to schools nearby in Kanye and how were they assisted to return home over the school vacation and back to school when they re-open. He also wanted to know how parents were assisted to maintain contact with the school and the teachers. Ends
