Under 13 cricket league starts

03 Apr 2014

Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) has started an Under-13 boys’ league in its Francistown region, which is set to run for three months from April to June.

The league is part of the association’s commendable efforts to drive cricket development at grassroots level and create a pool of talent that will be drafted into the junior national teams.

According to Sumod Damodar, the secretary for fixtures and publicity at BCA, teams representing the four cricket zone in the Francistown region will participate in the league. These are Zones A, B, C and D, and players have been drawn from primary schools in the second city.

“The objectives of the league are to introduce players to competition stage at an early age, create a wide base of talent identification, and a platform for selection for a regional Under-13 team to compete at inter-regional and national competitions,” he explained.

Damodar said the league is intended to give coaches exposure into umpiring, scoring and general administration of teams in match situations.

The league kicked-off on Thursday afternoon with a match between Zones A and C, with other round robin matches set to follow on April 10, 17, 24, May 9 and June 13. It will thereafter move into the semi-final and final stages. ENDS
