03 Apr 2014
The Competition Authority has since its inception in 2011 received 83 cases of possible anti-competitive practices with 11 of them specifically on price fixing, Parliament has been informed.
Answering a question in Parliament , the Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Keletso Rakhudu said only 40 cases were escalated to the investigation phase while 43 cases did not raise any competition issues.
Mr Rakhudu said to date, the Competition Authority has completed investigations into four cases of price fixing and were referred to the Competition Commission which adjudicate on competition matters.
Parliament heard that out of the four cases that had been referred to the Competition Commission only one has been decided on, which was not in favour of the complainant.
Member of Parliament for South East South, Mr Odirile Motlhale had asked the minister to state how many cases of anti-competitive behaviour and price fixing were reported to the Competition Authority since its inception.
Mr Motlhale also wanted to know how many cases were in favour of the complainant. Ends
