Kanye in water deficit of 3.8m litres

27 Mar 2014

The daily current water for Kanye is 14.7 million litres while Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) is only able to supply 10.9 million litres, resulting in a deficit of 3.8 million litres.

Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Mr Kitso Mokaila said when responding to a question in Parliament from Kanye South MP, Mr Abram Kesupile.

Mr Mokaila added that “livestock watering and bulk ferrying of water from public stand pipes considerably lead to supply deficit, hence worsening the water challenges in most villages in Botswana, Kanye and Lotlhakane East were no exceptions.”

He also noted that various efforts continued to be put in place in Kanye and Lotlhakane East in an effort to manage efficiently the available water resources and to find alternative water sources to augment the current water supply.

In the short term, Mr Mokaila said WUC was intensively implementing demand management which included; water rationing, installation of pre-paid standpipes, among other interventions, to reduce watering of livestock in public standpipes.

“A long term solution of connecting Kanye to the North South Carrier Scheme through a pipeline from Mmamashia treatment plant is underway and scheduled for completion in December 2016,” he added.

Mr Kesupile had asked Mr Mokaila to give an update of efforts to secure and supply water to Kanye and Lotlhakane East for existing and new demands whilst waiting for the long term north to south bound water supply project to start. Ends
