Education engine of human development
27 Mar 2014
Development, societal norms and morals have education to thank for their existence, chief executive officer of Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund, Mr Cross Kgosidiile, has said. He was speaking at Makhubu Junior Secondary School Victory celebrations in Selebi Phikwe recently.
Mr Kgosidiile said a country without a well-educated, skilled and informed human resource had no means to grow, develop and compete or take part in the global village.
He commended parents and guardians for having found the need to send their children to school as it had been said on numerous occasions that children represented the future and hope of this nation.
Mr Kgosidiile also said students should take education seriously. He said they should embrace knowledge in all forms to equip themselves with life skills to be able to compete in the global market
He noted that the victory party, which was characterised by awarding of certificates to deserving students was meant to motivate students to aim higher in their educational endeavor.
In addition, he urged other students to learn from their peers who graduated from junior secondary school so that next year and in years to come, they would also be called forward to receive their certificates and awards for doing well in the examinations.
Mr Kgosidiile explained MVA Fund was part of the broader community of Botswana and therefore had an obligation to effectively participate in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development’s Adopt a School initiative. He also called on Batswana in general and organisations country-wide to play a role in the Adopt-a-School initiative.
For her part, the school head, Ms Kitso Obonye, said staging a victory celebration was an annual event at the school. She said Makhubu school had remained among the top 10 schools in the country for many years, producing good results.
She said in the 2013 junior secondary examination results her school still maintained their position in the top 10 schools nationally. Ms Obonye said herschool obtained 93 per cent pass rate to rank position six countrywide and number one in the Selebi Phikwe Cluster.
“We managed to register seven (7) A’s, 62 B’s, 73 C’s, 52 D’s,10 E’s and no grade U”, she said. Meanwhile one of the seven student who obtained grade A, Tshegofatso Mbanga, testified that unity among students and teachers prevailed and discipline was one of the factors that motivated the students to work hard and ultimately pass in great numbers.
