17 Mar 2014

Gaborone Two comfortably beat Gaborone Three by five wickets in the opening match of the National Twenty20 (T20) Cricket Tournament southern region on Sunday morning (March 16).

The nine team competition, organised by the Botswana Cricket Association (BCA), kicked off at the BCA Oval in Gaborone this weekend and will end on May 11.

Gaborone Three batted first and managed to post 135 runs for six wickets in their 20 overs.

They made a steady 118 runs in their first 18 overs, but managed to score an impressive 20 runs in the last two overs to take their tally to 135-6. This left Gaborone Two with the task of chasing a target of 136 runs to win the match, but they got their chase off to a slow start as they managed 57 runs for two wickets in their first ten overs.

However, their chase received a massive boost when they racked off 43 runs between the 11th and 14th overs.

Knowing that they required just 36 runs from 36 balls to win the match, Gaborone Two batsmen went on the rampage, hitting a number of boundaries to reach 136 runs for five wickets after 19.2 overs. They therefore, won the match by five wickets with four balls to spare.

In the second match of the day, Gaborone Three’s misery was compounded when they lost again, this time to Gaborone Four who beat them by four wickets.

Like in the first match, Gaborone Three batted first and posted 156 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs.

However, with Imran Khan leading their charge with a total of 64 runs, Gaborone Four managed 164 runs for 6 wickets in 19.3 overs. Therefore, Gaborone Four won the match by four wickets.

The first edition of the competition was won by Minjex Mokwepa who defeated Blue Tree Tshukudu in last year’s final. ENDS
