Climate change policy on course

13 Mar 2014

The development of the Climate Change Policy, Strategy and Action Plan which started in August last year is on course.

Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi said in Parliament on behalf of the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism that inception phase was completed October last year.

She said since the process was a bottom up approach, the policy formulation had to a large extent to be informed by district consultations.

Dr Venson-Moitoi said the consultations commenced in December and to date 5 districts have been covered.
Consultations, she said, were undertaken in Molepolole, Ramotswa, Gantsi, Kanye and Masunga, while consultations would also be undertaken in all the 10 districts.

She said it was envisaged that the remaining districts would be consulted by March/April with validation workshops following thereafter.

The minister was hopeful that with this development the draft policy could be available for consideration at the latest by June this year, with strategy and action plan to follow.

MP for Gaborone South, Mr Kagiso Molatlhegi had asked the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism to update Parliament on progress made in developing the National Climate Change Policy and to further state when would the policy be tabled in Parliament. Ends
