Water supply at Shadishadi hostels normalises

12 Mar 2014

The Kweneng District Council has been bowsing water for hostels at Shadishadi Primary School since 2010 because the village water supply scheme was closed as a result of contamination of the source.

Assistant Minister Botlogile Tshireletso of local government and rural development said in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, that the problem was the malfunctioning booster pump which reticulated water to the toilets and ablution areas.

Ms Tshireletso said, however, that the booster pump was repaired in February this year and the water supply to the hostels had been restored. She said she was aware that when the booster pump was not working properly, students were forced to walk to the school toilets.

Because the hostels shared the fence with the school and both facilities had night watchmen, the security and welfare of the students were not compromised when they walked from the hostels to the school toilets at night.

The welfare of the 320 boarding students was catered for by the matron and the boarding master who were also accommodated in the same premises.

The MP for Kweneng East, Maj. Gen. Moeng Pheto, had asked why it took more than three years to provide the school dormitories with water, and whether or not the minister was aware that children more than 100 metres at night to go to the school toilets without any escort and regardless of the weather conditions.

Maj. Gen. Pheto had also wanted to know the plans were in place to address the situation that affected the welfare and security of the 320 boarding students at Shadishadi Primary School. Ends
