GU appoints Gumbo technical director

10 Mar 2014

Gaborone United have appointed former Zimbabwe national team coach, Rahman Gumbo as their new technical director.

The club announced on Friday, March 7 that they had agreed a one and half year deal with Gumbo, who previously coached Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Township Rollers in the be Mobile Premier League.

The Gaborone giants, currently lying on third place in the premier league log, explained that Gumbo will be responsible for overseeing all GU structures, including development and the women’s soccer team.

GU had been linked with Gumbo for several months now and rumours that he would join the club heightened after the club suspended their coach, Major David Bright last month.

GU said they were investigating reasons why the team was performing unsatisfactorily in the current campaign following big investments in the squad.

Assistant coach George Mogopodi has been leading the team on interim basis and the club said he would continue coaching the first team until Bright’s suspension was resolved.

Gumbo first came to Botswana to take charge of Rollers in 2008 and led them to the league and Coca Cola Cup double in the 2009/10 season. In a surprising move, he dumped Rollers for Chiefs the following season but failed to win silverware with the Kgatleng giants. ENDS
