05 Mar 2014

Parliament has been informed that the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs with the technical assistance of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), is working on a proposal for the establishment of a Broad Based Occupational Pension Scheme for Botswana.

The Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Mr Edwin Batshu told Parliament on Tuesday, March 4 that this was in line with Decent Work Country programme signed by government and social partners in 211.

Responding to a question from the MP for Lobatse, Mr Nehemiah Modubule, Minister Batshu explained that a report was expected to be ready by the end of March this year.

He said as soon as the report was submitted to his ministry, consultations with stakeholders and relevant ministries would commence, and the outcome of the consultations would be presented to government for consideration.

Mr Batshu said it would only be after government’s consideration that his ministry would know with certainty whether or not the establishment of Broad based occupational pension scheme would materialise.

MP Modubule had asked when a contributory broad based occupational pension scheme would be introduced. ENDS
