The Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng says the late Olympian, Gaone “Lux” Maotoanong’s legacy would live on through the athletes he inspired, the teammates he supported and the contribution he made to Botswana’s sporting success.

Kelebeng described Maotoanong as a patriot whose outstanding achievements and dedication to athletics brought honor to Botswana.

Speaking at Maotoanong’s memorial service at the National Stadium in Gaborone on Wednesday, Kelebeng said the late sprinter was disciplined, resilient and committed, having represented the country with pride on the international stage.

He said Maotoanong’s contribution to sport extended beyond competition, as he also served on the Botswana National Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission from 2021 to 2025.

He said the late athlete’s decision to obtain a Level One coaching certification last year demonstrated his commitment to developing future generations of athletes and strengthening the sporting fraternity.

Kelebeng further urged young athletes to draw inspiration from Maotoanong’s journey by pursuing excellence through perseverance, sacrifice and dedication, while representing the national colours with pride.

He said although the athlete’s race had come to an untimely end, his name would remain associated with excellence, courage, national pride and service to sport.

Maotoanong’s career was highlighted by a gold medal in the 4x400m relay at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, as well as African Championships relay gold medals in 2014 and 2016.  Coach Justice Dipeba also remembered the late Olympian as a resilient athlete and jovial teammate who inspired those around him. Dipeba recalled the sprinter’s humor and his welcoming nature, particularly his playful interactions with young athletes during team trips.

He said Maotoanong made younger athletes feel welcome and took time to guide them, leaving a lasting impression on his teammates.  Dipeba said Maotoanong demonstrated resilience following criticism of his performance after the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, going on to contribute to Botswana’s men 4x400m relay gold medal victory at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

He died last week on Wednesday and is scheduled to be laid to rest in Tlokweng on Saturday.  ENDS
