Mosimanyana stitches heritage into modern fashion

At just 24, fashion designer Isago Mosimanyana is carving a her path in Botswana’s fashion industry.

Through her label, Isago Ntle Designs, the Limkokwing University graduate is building a brand that celebrates cultural identity while embracing modern fashion trends.

The brand’s name, a creative interpretation of her first name, represents her ambition to contribute to the growth of Botswana’s fashion industry.

“I want Isago Ntle to stand for timeless style, cultural consciousness and a distinctive African luxury aesthetic,” she said.

A native of Molepolole, Mosimanyana’s journey began to take shape during her Fashion Design studies at Limkokwing University, where she acquired skills in illustration, pattern drafting, garment construction and the business aspects of running a fashion enterprise.

Her training taught her that creativity alone is insufficient to sustain a fashion label. Designers must also understand materials, production, financial management and the commercial realities of the industry.

Although university provided the foundation, she continues to develop her craft through experimentation, mentorship and exposure to the fashion industry.

Denim and leather are among her preferred materials. However, Isago Ntle Designs began with swimwear made from nylon Lycra, a collection she remains proud of for its originality and willingness to experiment.

Her participation in Fashion Without Borders Africa has been among her proudest milestones, providing an opportunity to showcase her work and engage with a wider African fashion audience.

She also secured a Mr Price scholarship through Fashion Without Borders Botswana, which offered her a three-month internship in Durban to gain further industry experience.

Beyond individual achievements, Mosimanyana believes collaboration is essential for emerging designers seeking to establish sustainable businesses.

Together with fellow graduate Bokani Monei and experienced designer Phumzile Akolang of Exquisite Designs, she formed a collective that enabled the designers to share expenses, exchange ideas and learn from one another.

Akolang mentored the younger designers while they were still at university, and the relationship subsequently developed into a working partnership.

Mosimanyana said the arrangement had demonstrated how shared resources, industry knowledge and professional networks could help young creatives navigate the challenges of establishing their businesses.

For Mosimanyana, building a fashion label also requires visibility. Networking, participating in fashion events and maintaining an active social media presence help designers reach potential clients and establish industry connections.

Pricing, she said, must reflect the complexity of a garment, the technical skill required, the time invested and the design process.

Her advice to aspiring Batswana designers is to begin rather than wait for perfect conditions.

“Do not wait until everything is perfect before you begin. Experiment, learn through experience and expose your skills and craft to the world,” she said. ENDS
