Botswana premier league heavy weights Gaborone United (GU) and Mochudi Centre Chiefs have avoided each other in the African Heroes Top 8 semi-final draw held on October 25.

The two crowd pullers avoided facing each other directly in the the semi-finals, paving the way for high-stakes matches as the tournament approaches its climax.

The allure of these ‘cupsets’ forms an integral part of the tournament’s mystique and the cultural fabric of football and the semi-finals draw is no exception as it has pitted GU against Jwaneng Galaxy while Centre Chiefs will battle it out against Sua Flamingoes in a double header scheduled for November 7 at the National Stadium.

Undoubtedly, the blockbuster tie between the reigning premier league champions GU and Orange FA cup champions, Jwaneng Galaxy would indisputably headline the showdown.GU secured their ticket to the semi-finals by beating NICO United 2-0 on Friday night at Gaborone United Stadium.

Namibian international Obry Amseb gave the ‘Reds’ the lead at the break before Thabo Maponda wrapped up the match in the second half to secure victory for GU.

Jwaneng Galaxy edged past Township Rollers with a hard-fought 1–0 victory on Sunday in Jwaneng, courtesy of Gilbert Mugisha, to book their place in the semis.

The betting odds are undoubtedly in the Reds favour buoyed by their recent positive vein of form.  GU has a reputation of being perennial winners and it is on the back of this that they will be hopeful to add another trophy to their wide range of collections and live up to their ‘Money machine’ tag line.

Another mouth-watering encounter is expected in the second semi-finals when on form Sua Flamingoes takes on Centre Chiefs.

A daunting task awaits Flamingoes against the unpredictable Centre Chiefs team, which seems to be finding their rhyme under coach Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

Sua Flamingoes proceeded to the semis following a 2-1 extra time victory against Orapa United while crowd favorites Centre Chiefs on the other hand booked their semi-final spot following a 3-1 victory against struggling Morupule Wanderers.

Mpho Kgawasane, Kelvin Ndebele and Nahuel Melgarejo were on target for Magosi while Leeroy Murape scored a consolidating goal for Morupule Wanderers. ENDS
