22 Oct 2026

Redpath Botswana has shown commitment to community inclusion as the main sponsor of the South Region Special Olympics Botswana Games 2026, hosted in Jwaneng on October 20, under the theme : From Inclusion to Action: The Special Olympics Legacy and Our Role Today.

The games, which attracted athletes from six districts, were officially opened by Redpath Botswana, with the company stating that inclusion must be demonstrated through action, not just promises.

In her official opening speech delivered on behalf of Redpath Botswana Project Manager, Redpath CLO Bokani Sethetho said the games celebrate courage, determination and talent, and the belief that every individual deserved an opportunity to participate, belong and succeed.

“To our athletes, you are the heart of these games.

Your courage to participate, your determination to improve and your willingness to give your best remind us that success is not defined by limitations, but by the spirit with which we face challenges,” she said.

She appreciated parents, guardians, coaches and teachers for their dedication, adding that Redpath recognizes its responsibility extends beyond mining operations, to contributing to meaningful community opportunities.

Giving welcome remarks, Jwaneng deputy Mayor Victor Watshipi said sport was critical in promoting healthy living as the country battles non-communicable diseases.

Watshipi said Jwaneng Town Council long-term plan was to turn Jwaneng into a sports hub, noting that physical activity benefited lifestyles beyond sport.

The games are aligned with Special Olympics Botswana’s mission to empower children and adults with intellectual disabilities through sports, health initiatives and community inclusion.

According to the South Region Special Olympics chairperson Joseph Majako, the core objectives include Olympic type sports training and competition in athletics, soccer and judo, personal development, inclusive health care through the healthy athlete programme, youth and school empowerment to reduce stigma and combat isolation, and a pathway to select and prepare Team Botswana for international competitions such as the Special Olympics World Games and AUSC Region 5 Youth Games.
