The newly elected Sefophe Ward councillor, Mr Mokwaledi Bagwasi of the Botswana Congress Party has promised to collaborate with various stakeholders to effectively address the pressing needs of the community and advance developments in the area. Doing so, he said required a united approach that transcended political divide.
Mr Bagwasi underscored the importance of prioritising community service delivery over political rivalry, advocating for a shared commitment aimed at enhancing the quality of livelihoods for all residents.
“I accept the results and commit to working with all relevant governance stakeholders to ensure that the needs of the Sefhophe community are addressed in a timely and effective manner,” Mr Bagwasi said. He further highlighted that cooperation and mutual respect among different political factions was essential for meaningful progress.
The Sefophe bye election follows the death of Christopher Motsholapheko of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) who passed away in July. The ward had a total of 3 078 registered voters out of whom, 2 032 cast their votes during the Saturday exercise.
Mr Bagwasi garnered 800 votes, followed by the UDC’s, Mr Thabiso Galebotse with 705, Ms Same Senkanang-Ditshoto of Botswana Democratic Party with 291 and Mr Loeto Porati of Botswana Patriotic Front with 225 votes. Only 11 spoilt votes were registered.
Meanwhile, the returning officer, Mr Bigboy Mangwa, said the process ran smoothly and efficiently, a success attributed to the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders.
Mr Mangwa noted that while the process was largely successful, there were some challenges, particularly concerning voters who arrived at polling stations without National Identity Cards however, those were assisted and able to cast their vote. ENDS
