Botswana Golden Grand Prix reclaims status
19 Oct 2026
Preparations for next year’s edition of the Botswana Golden Grand Prix have officially started.
Following its reclaim of Gold status on the World Athletics Continental Tour 2027 edition, its all systems go for the organising committee to secure sponsorships. The date is set for April 24 at the National Stadium in Gaborone.
The track and field event suffered a temporary setback when it was stripped of its elite tier positioning following the 2025 edition, for failing to satisfy specific World Athletics regulatory requirements.
This year’s meet was forced to run under a downgraded Silver status, a development that saw the local organising working relentlessly to win back the sport’s highest continental honour.
Golden Door Sports Agency director, Glody Dube, said in an interview that the reinstatement was a victory not only for Botswana, but the entire African continent. He said the high profile meets hosted in Africa empowered local athletes, the continent, officials, and coaches.
Beyond continental pride, Dube said the gold status was a powerful marketing tool for the nation, ensuring that Gaborone would once again become an attention for the world’s elite track and field stars.
He said the event was also broadcast in more than 154 countries, putting the spotlight on Botswana.
Dube said the previous edition suffered divided national attention since local sporting bodies and resources were stretched owing to Botswana also playing host to the World Athletics Relays.
He said things would improve next year because government had already made a commitment to provide undivided state backing and ensure operations ran seamlessly. ENDS
